The Certificate in Creative Writing offers an innovative, collaborative course of study for those who have always wanted to unlock their creativity. Each course is designed as a workshop in which you explore new ideas, tackle new writing tools, generate original insights and discover your own powers of expression. You create, collaboratively discuss and revise your original writing with feedback from your instructors and your peers. You also engage with a range of assigned readings and multimedia that inform and grow your innovative practice. The Certificate in Creative Writing offers both basic and advanced workshops and appeals to students new to creative writing as well as students with writing experience who want to learn new skills.

UC Forward certificates promote innovation through trans-disciplinary collaboration. Earning a UC Forward certificate allows you to distinguish yourself to potential employers as a graduate with special skills and experience. UC Forward certificates provide you with a course of study designed to help you acquire those special skills that build on your technical and creative abilities to support success in innovation, ideation, and collaboration. To earn a UC Forward certificate, students are required to take one of two introductory courses and no fewer than three electives for a total of 15 credit hours.

The English Department is home to a thriving Creative Writing program. Our faculty have collectively published more than forty books of fiction, poetry, literary nonfiction, and criticism. They have won awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Ingram Merrill Foundation, and the Fulbright Program, as well as University-wide awards for outstanding teaching and mentoring.
