The European migrant crisis ,      also known as the refugee crisis ,      was a period characterised by high numbers of people arriving in the European Union EU overseas from across the Mediterranean Sea or overland through Southeast Europe. The migrant crisis was part of a pattern of increased forced migration to Europe from other continents which is said to have begun in Many refugees that arrived in Italy and Greece came from countries where armed conflict was ongoing Syrian Civil War , Afghanistan War , Iraqi conflict or which otherwise were considered to be " refugee-producing " and for whom international protection is needed. The collapse of border controls during the Libyan Civil War — abetted human smuggling through Libya, with the Libya route used by huge numbers of people. The BBC used the term "migrant" to represent all the people on the move during this period in its review articles published in "Migrant crisis: Migration to Europe explained"  and "Europe migrant crisis".
The influx of refugees and immigrants across the European borders in the year was seen by others as a foreseeable crisis that was contributed by improper implementation of the EU immigration policies. The signs of this crisis were significant in , when the governments were cautioned of the large inflows and loss of live on the Mediterranean Sea. In as much as the effects of this inflow was felt Italy, it was a significant warning of the crisis ahead.
